Perdiswell Primary School, Worcester

At Perdiswell Primary School we offer a curriculum which is broad and balanced and which builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills of all children, whatever their starting points, as they progress through each Key Stage. The curriculum incorporates the statutory requirements of the new National Curriculum 2014 and other exciting, stimulating experiences and opportunities which best meet the learning and developmental needs of the pupils in our school. The aim of our curriculum is to develop a community of learners who have the skills and knowledge to excel, to be confident, curious and resilient citizens.

The Foundation Stage Framework and Development Matters are the basis of our Reception curriculum. In Reception, we give children daily opportunities to read, write and apply their mathematical understanding underpinned by well planned activities to ensure excellent social skills and physical development. As a result, our children start Year 1 as confident and competent learners.  Further details about the Framework can be found here:

Perdiswell Primary is proud to be a reading school as we recognise the enormous benefits our children experience when they are enthusiastic, confident readers. We use Read, Write Inc to teach our pupils phonics, reading and spelling in Reception and Year 1. This approach is recognised as an excellent starting point for children to develop their early skills and become fluent readers by Year 2. We then use a range of challenging text through well-planned guided and shared reading approaches to develop a rich understanding and use of vocabulary, comprehension of a wide range of text and a love of reading for pleasure.

Our maths curriculum is based on the Singapore and Shanghai approach to develop mathematicians who are competent using and reasoning with numbers. Using concrete apparatus, our children are active learners in every lesson, to challenge their thinking and find a range of solutions. When solving a maths problem, the answer is only the beginning.

Through outdoor learning, residential trips, visits and visitors we enrich our pupils learning experiences and ensure they remember them. These opportunities bring our themes to life, setting learning in a context which is often the focus for an end of topic parent workshop or assembly.

Perdiswell’s core values of Respect, Empathy, Independence, Unity, Honesty and Perseverance are a golden thread through all aspects of our curriculum.  We expect our pupils to demonstrate these both in school and when representing our school at the many sporting and arts events that we participate in.

Through all aspects of learning we focus on a Growth Mindset as every member of our school community recognises that we are all learners with a positive attitude to challenges and the mistakes we make. Through our exciting curriculum themes, we aim to give our pupils the confidence and motivation to learn and enjoy success.
